We have far too many folks quoting incessant facts and figures on energy to make their points about why we must go green. Still, when we really take a hard look at those figures; one has to ask; "yah, so what?" I mean a good bit of the information and data they spew is totally irrelevant. One figure I love is when an environmentalist tells us that we must conserve energy in our homes because the United States of America has only 300 million of the 7.8 Billion people on the planet and yet it uses nearly 48% of all the energy.
Okay, but so what? We make the energy for own homes in country, here using coal-fired plants, hydro-electric, nuclear, geo-thermal, etc. yes, and we also have 1% coming in from solar and wind, seriously, those alternative energy sources as a percentage of our total energy usage in our nation are a joke. That is if we really want to look at the real figures. In Indonesia, Africa, and a good part of South America, billions of people live, but most do not even have any power, and that's not our fault. So, the reality that we use 50% of the world's energy doesn't make us bad people.
We need to stop apologizing to the world for our awesome energy infrastructure, our low-cost of electricity, and our industrialized nation. You see, we are the greatest nation in the history of mankind, and there is NOTHING wrong with that, we built it, it's great, and we are very wise for doing so. We should not be trashing coal technologies, as we have lots of coal plants, and there is now "clean-coal technologies" available.
We should be concentrating on the clean coal technologies since we already have that infrastructure built, we should not do anything to subsidize non-efficient, costly, or unreliable alternative energy like wind or solar. You see, sometimes the wind doesn't blow, and sun notoriously doesn't shine at night, meaning we can't get rid of coal plants right now anyway, so let's stop kidding ourselves.
All we are going to do is raise energy costs, which have historically been the lowest in the world here in the US, giving us the advantage in manufacturing. Now we are getting slaughtered in world markets due to low-labor rates in emerging nations, and China - our low cost energy helps our ability to compete. If we follow the environmental green movement motif, we will dishonor our workforce and destroy our middle class - that is unacceptable.
So, be careful with those who quote those numbers No Matter Who They Are. I've seen that figure quoted at the TED Conferences, UN, Global Climate Conferences, and even from our own politicians who are supposed to have our best interests in mind. Here is what MUST be done.
- We fund alternative energy research
- We do not subsidize alternative energy production
- We allow free markets and capital to flow once the ROI is legitimate
Other than that, we do nothing. We stop listening to other nations, most of whom want to sell us solar panels or compete with our industrial base on global markets, and we get a real energy strategy. Sure, "GREEN" sounds sexy, wonderful, but let the free-market handle all that if and when it's ready, and believe me once it makes investment sense it will happen faster than your head can spin. We do not need government or the UN or anyone else telling the United States of America what to do.
